Music Video Analysis - Music Video's I Like

Music video's appeal to different people in different ways, for some people it may have a meaning and for some it may just be a means of entertainment or pleasure.

Here are some of the videos i like:

Angel ft Wretch 32 - Go in, Go hard
I really like this music video because it looks like a lot of work has been put into it. For example, one thing that is very obvious to us when we watch this video is that there are a lot of different places this video has been shot, which makes it looks really interesting as one minute we're in a dark the suddenly we're outside. Also in each different setting we can see that the music artist (Angel) is dressed in many different outfits and not the same one. There are also some good effects found in the video for example the use of a shaky camera and also the blur that is used in some cases when the setting has change. Another good effect is the good use of transitions. This video is FULL of different transitions, the settings are forever changing. Another good thing i like about this music video is the different camera shots, there are a mixture of close ups and long shots.

Eminem - Without Me
This video is one of my favourite music videos, maybe because its quite funny and creative. This music video is pretty unique for a rap music video, as most rappers' music videos consists of flashy cars, girls and money but this video is definetly different. In this video, Eminem does a lot of acting which probably takes away all the seriousness from a rap music video. We see different clips where he is dressed as Elvis, robin, a woman and a terrorist. The video also consists of a lot of different settings at least 5, which makes if interesting unlike some videos where the video is either shot in just one setting or in just 2. Eminem is also dressed in many different outfits in this video. This video also features on of his close friends (Dr Dre.) who also is acting in the video.

Scorcher - It's My Time
I like this video because if feel it has a meaning which is expressed both through the visuals and through the lyrical content. The lyrics of the chorus are "Its my time and nothing wont get in my way...", during the video we see clips of three different people struggling and fighting there way to the top or to success. This could be related to the artist (scorcher) as he was not to know, but little by little his music and name is being heard.   I like that there is a great use of lighting and colour. I love the settings, especially when scorcher is on the top of the building. There are good transitions, but compared to other music videos i have seen, there are not so many effects.

Coldplay - Charlie Brown
I love both the video and the song. This video is just full of so much action and colour, something that can really get a person going. The music adds a lot to the music video, for example the chorus when there is a bit of a guitar solo. The music is full of quick transition and effects. Although the video is not set in many places it, is made up by the use of vibrant colours and lighting. The video really stands out from others.

Record Labels

A record label is a brand and a trademark associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. Often, a record label is also a company that manages such brands and trademarks; coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of new artists and maintains contracts with recording artists and their managers. The term "record label" derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record which prominently displays the manufacturer's name, along with other information
Within the music industry; most recording artists have become increasingly reliant upon record labels to broaden their consumer base, market their albums, and be both promoted and heard on mp3, radio, etc. and of course television also, with publicists that assist performers in positive media reports to market their merchandise, and make it available via stores and other media outlets. The Internet has increasingly been a way that some artists avoid costs and gain new audiences, as well as the use of videos in some cases, to sell their products.

Major labels since 2012 (Big Three)
  1. Universal Music Group (EMI recorded music division absorbed into UMG)
  2. Sony Music Entertainment (EMI Music Publishing absorbed into Sony/ATV Music Publishing)
  3. Warner Music Group
Record labels are often under the control of a corporate umbrella organization called a "music group". A music group is typically owned by an international conglomerate "holding company", which often has non-music divisions as well. A music group controls and consists of music publishing companies, record (sound recording) manufacturers, record distributors, and record labels. As of 2005, the "big four" music groups control about 70% of the world music market, and about 80% of the United States music market. Record companies (manufacturers, distributors, and labels) may also comprise a "record group" which is, in turn, controlled by a music group. The constituent companies in a music group or record group are sometimes marketed as being "divisions" of the group.

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP
Universal Music was once the music company attached to film studio Universal Pictures. Its origins go back to the formation of the American branch of Decca Records in 1934. The Decca Corporation of England spun American Decca off in 1939. MCA Inc. bought American Decca in 1962. The present organization was formed when its parent company Seagram purchased PolyGram and merged it with Universal Music Group in 1998. However, the name first appeared in 1996 when MCA Music Entertainment Group was renamed Universal Music Group. The PolyGram acquisition included Deutsche Grammophon which traces its ancestry to Berliner Gramophone making Deutsche Grammophon UMG's oldest unit. UMG's Canadian unit traces its ancestry to a Berliner Gramophone breakaway firm the Compo Company.

There are many artist signed or associated to Universal Music Group:

Music Channels/Institutional Context

If my music video was to be played on television on a music channel, what institution/channel would it be played on? In order for me to know, i will need to research the top music channels and the type of music they play.
In the Uk there are quick a few MTV channels dedicated to different genres of music:
  • MTV
  • MTV +1
  • MTV BASE
  • MTV MUSIC
  • MTV HITS
  • MTV CLASSICS
  • MTV ROCKS

MTV is an American cable television channel which stands for Music Television. MTV was launched in August 1 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJ's. Today, MTV primarily broadcasts a variety of reality and scripted television programs. The audience for MTV is mainly adolescents and young adults.

Kerrang! TV is a digital television station owned by Box Television, which is loosely connected to the magazine, Kerrang!. As of 2005, all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.
The TV station's playlist is mainly nu metal and pop-punk/skate punk, although with some unusual exceptions. Certain bands, such as Tenacious D and Limp Bizkit get higher than average play rates, due to higher rates of text requests. There are also some unusual plays, such as Beastie Boys, and The Bloodhound Gang. Rap artist Eminem has many of his videos played on Kerrang, which has caused controversy among long-time fans. This has also led to criticism of racism on the part of Kerrang; because black musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, despite being considered an historically vital rock musician, does not receive airplay, while white rappers such as Beastie Boys and Eminem do.

Artists/bands that have their music played on Kerrang:

Channel AKA (formerly Channel U) is a British digital satellite TV channel, owned by All Around the World Productions, available through Sky within the UK and Ireland on channel 370. It is a music channel, focusing on playing upcoming UK urban/grime/hip-hop music and has helped the breakthrough for acts such as Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Devlin and N-Dubz.
The parent company of Fizz TV and Channel U went into voluntary liquidation at the beginning of February, 2009, before being purchased by Mushroom TV. When purchasing the two channels, Mushroom TV agreed that Channel U and Fizz TV should be rebranded. The two channels were rebranded as Channel AKA and Starz TV on 16 March 2009.
Aims: The aim of the channel is to provide fresh and exclusive entertainment to the viewers and to allow viewers to voice their opinions on videos through the power of voting. Not only does this give the viewer control over their viewing, it also allows artists to see how people are reacting to their music. AKA (formerly Channel U) highlights to the public, the raw and unsigned talent we have in the UK, and it has been successful in this mission, as suggested by the production and popularity of such compilation CDs as Channel U: The Album.
On 22 June 2012, Mushroom TV entered liquidation. Ofcom's television broadcast licensing update for May 2012, indicates that Channel AKA was sold to All Around the World Productions

Chart Show TV is a British music television channel owned and operated by CSC Media Group (formerly Chart Show Channels), the same people behind The Chart Show, a television programme that had previously been on Channel 4 and ITV, before relaunching it themselves in 2008. It launched in 16 September 2002 and initially consisted of several different charts, mimicking the format of the television show upon which is was based; however, many of these were dropped and the channel started showing mainly just videos. Chart format shows have been brought back based on different genres such as the rock chart, urban chart and download chart.
The channel plays a mixture of the chart format shows along with the latest music from artists and bands, plus chart-topping videos from most song genres. It also shows programmes dedicated to particular artists and allows viewers to vote for their most wanted videos each week. Recently, special programmes featuring interviews with artists and bands about upcoming singles and albums, plus music-related chat, are being shown on Chart Show TV.
